Sasanka zwyczajna jest wczesnowiosenną byliną. W początkowej fazie wzrostu liście, tak jak i cała roślina są jedwabiście, miękko owłosione, później mniej lub bardziej nagie. Pęd kwiatostanowy, zakończony pojedynczym, dzwonkowatym kwiatem, skierowanym do góry lub lekko pochylonym w czasie kwitnienia osiąga wysokość 15-20 cm, a w czasie owocowania dorasta do 40 cm. Kwiat w zależności od odmiany - biały, czerwony lub fioletowy z żółtym środkiem osiąga średnicę 6-8 cm i jest bardzo atrakcyjny dla pszczół. Po rozwinięciu kwiaty skierowane są ku górze. Kwitnienie przypada na okres kwietnia i maja. Sasanka w każdej fazie swojego wzrostu, począwszy od pięknych pąków kwiatowych, przez ciekawe, rozwinięte kwiaty do uroczych, puszystych owocostanów jest ozdobą każdego ogrodu. Winna być sadzona na rabatach i w ogrodach skalnych. Nadaje się do ogrodów wrzosowych i do ogrodów naturalistycznych. Dobrze rośnie na stanowiskach słonecznych z lekką, piaszczystą glebą, która powinna być raczej sucha i uboga, dobrze zdrenowana.
